Coping with Seasonal Hair Loss

pexels-photoIn a previous blog we brought up the topic of seasonal hair loss. Often thought of as a myth, seasonal hair loss is a very real phenomenon that can occur during extreme weather which causes the hair to go into a phase of resting that leaves it susceptible to falling out. While this is a normal occurrence and there isn’t much need to try and prevent it, if you find yourself experiencing seasonal hair loss there are some ways of coping with it until your hair is back to its normal self.

Brush more – While this may seem like the opposite of what you want to do, it’s necessary. If more hair is falling out, it’s just going to build up in the healthy hair, so brushing more frequently will weed out the loose hairs.
Use less – Using less product is another way to ensure you’re not letting a lot of dead hair build up. Things like mousses and gels are sticky and can prevent the natural shedding process that your hair is going through.
Wear the right clothes – If your shedding follicles are showing up as a part of your wardrobe a little more frequently than you’d like, consider the clothing you’re wearing. Wearing dark clothes will help conceal darker and hair and wearing lighter clothes will help hide lighter hair. Additionally, fabric choice can make or break your hair showing up on your clothes. Fabrics that are prone to static will hold on to loose hairs, but smoother fabrics, like silk, will let them fall.
Leave your hair down – This is something you should try to practice all of the time, but especially during times when you may be losing more hair than usual. Tying your hair up in a tight ponytail or bun can damage perfectly healthy hair, so when your hair is a little more susceptible to falling out, you definitely want to leave it in more relaxed styles.

While seasonal hair loss is nothing to worry about, if your hair is coming out in worrying amounts or falling out in a patterned way, you may want to get a consultation to get to the root of the problem and determine a course of action. At Hans Wiemann, we can help you at any stage during hair loss. We offer non-surgical hair replacement options as well as ARTAS® robotic transplants – contact us today at HansWiemann.com.

How to Promote and Maintain Healthy Hair Growth

hansbb

The secret to strong, healthy hair actually begins with a healthy scalp. Maintaining a clean scalp is just as important as maintaining your hair and can be affected by your environment, diet, medications and how often you style your hair. For those that have had hair transplants, dermatologists have observed that transplanted follicles grow better in healthy scalp skin than in scarred areas. If you want long luscious locks, you have to start with the scalp. Here are five tips for top-notch scalp care:

  1. Clean Your Scalp

Your scalps condition affects the health and appearance of your hair so it’s important to make sure you’re keeping it clean. The hair and scalp actually create more bacteria, dirt, oil and dead skin cells than any other area of our bodies. Shampoo your hair to clear away product build up and bacteria that can cause dry, itchy scalp. Shampooing also loosens dead skin and washes away oil and dirt sitting on your scalp, preventing flaking and dandruff. We recommend Gen-Tecs Volumizing Glycolic Shampoo or Physician Strength Shampoo, available at Hans Wiemann. These shampoos are designed to repair and maintain the natural acidic pH of the hair and scalp. The hair and scalp create more bacteria, dirt, oil and dead skin cells than any other area of our bodies. Your hair and scalp should have a natural acidic pH that ranges between 4.0 and 5.0. When washing your hair use the pads of your fingers and rub in a circular motion to improve blood circulation in the scalp then rinse with cool water.

  1. Moisturize Your Scalp

Some people may worry that conditioner weighs down their hair and clogs pores. However, just like your hair, your scalp needs hydration too. Dermatologists suggest using a non-comedogenic conditioner after a wash and apply starting at the tips of your locks moving to the roots. Utilize a foamy or spray-on leave-in conditioner to prevent weighing down fine hair. Add a drop of natural oil, such as argon oil, to your leave in conditioner to lock in extra moisture that will last throughout the day. The Hans Wiemann line of Gen-Tecs products also features a Deep Repair Protein Conditioner, fortified with Pantheone and Keratin Amino Acids to restore moisture.

  1. Exfoliate!

Your scalp’s epidermis is just like the rest of your skin and sometimes need to be exfoliated to loosen dead skin cells. Use a couple spoonfuls of sugar or cinnamon in your shampoo and massage your scalp in a circular motion for a couple minutes with the pads of your fingers. Don’t scrub with your fingertips as this can cause unintentional scabbing. This massaging motion along with the grainy mixture will exfoliate your scalp, loosen dead skin cells, and increase blood flow to the hair follicles, which promotes hair growth.

  1. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Regular exercise and a healthy diet are important in helping maintain a healthy scalp and luscious hair. Doctors recommend at least 30 minutes of exercise four to five times a week. They also suggest eating a balanced diet with foods that are rich in omega-3, fish oil, biotin, zinc, B vitamins, essential fatty acids, protein and iron. Also, wear a hat if you’re going to be exposed to the sun for a length of time to prevent sun damage.

Seasonal Hair Loss

pretty-woman-1509959_1920Extreme weather can be annoying for a number of reasons. It may hinder your plans, raise your electric/gas bill, and result in health and safety issues. One association you may not make with extreme weather is the process of hair loss.

Far from an old wives tale, there is actually a common phenomenon known as seasonal hair loss. So, if you’ve noticed more hair falling out than usual in the shower or when brushing your hair, you’re not imagining it and you’re not alone. When hair is exposed to extreme weather conditions, like the extreme heat in the months of July and August, higher rates of telogen are seen, typically in women. Telogen is a resting phase for the hair follicle, making it much more susceptible to breaking and falling out. The extreme conditions can cause up to 70 percent of your hair follicles to enter this phase much earlier than they normally would.

This is no cause for concern, for as we said this is a common phenomenon during July and August. This doesn’t mean you’re losing your hair or unhealthy, and you should probably just go about your normal routine. Since this is just a normal reaction, as hair is falling out there is also new hair growing. So you may lose a little bit more during these months, and occasionally during weather changes in late autumn, but you’ll hair replacing it in no time.

If you start noticing hair loss in patterns or in very specific areas however, this may be something other than seasonal hair loss. If you’re noticing any of these signs and would like a free consultation, contact Hans Wiemann at (888) 608-1233 or on our website, HansWiemann.com. We’re your trusted resource for hair restoration for women and men in the St. Louis area.

Bud Ford Beats the Competition with Help from Hans Wiemann

You might be surprised at how important your appearance can be even when you’re a radio host and rarely on camera. For Bud Ford, co-host of Bud and Broadway on WIL, this has a been a real concern. According to Bud, “We’re in a battle with young versus old and all these new kids are in fresh out of college. My challenge is to remain ahead of them. If I’m prematurely balding, the odds are against me.”

Recently, Bud decided to restore his hair and he chose Hans Wiemann. Bud explained his decision as, “They know their business. They’re number one at it…I wanted to work with the best to make sure I get the best result.”

Bud elected to have an ARTAS® Robotic FUE Hair Transplant. Hans Wiemann is one of only a select group of Centers permitted to use the ARTAS® Robotic machine and the only facility within a 300 mile radius of St. Louis. Using advanced algorithms, the ARTAS® Robot maps out the area of your scalp and identifies, then harvests, the healthiest hairs from your scalp. A Doctor then transplants these healthy hairs into the balding areas the client is looking to improve, in the hairs’ natural growth pattern, allowing for a completely natural looking result.

Out of several hair restoration procedures available at Hans Wiemann, Bud has related that he chose ARTAS® due to “One: I have no sutures; Two: I have no scarring; Three: I have very minimal to virtually no pain and most importantly I’m back at work in no time.”

In addition to the ARTAS® Robotic Hair Transplant, Bud is also receiving PRP Therapy. This revolutionary new treatment in hair restoration, which stands for Platelet Rich Plasma, can often enhance the results of a hair transplant by encouraging new growth and thickening the hair follicles, by using your own stem cells. A blood sample will be taken, spun in a centrifuge to separate the Platelet Rich Plasma from the blood, then this Plasma, filled with growth factors is injected into the client’s scalp. PRP is actually a treatment that has already been in use for years now to treat muscle and soft tissue injuries by Orthopedists.  At Hans Wiemann, this is offered as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with any other procedure.  It is FDA approved and has already shown amazing results in the realm of Hair Restoration.

Hair Loss Myths

hair-248048_1920Hair loss is a nuisance that many have to face at some point in their life. Having something to blame for this situation is often a sense of relief, however many of the “causes” people believe are responsible for their hair loss are not causes at all. Below we’ve outline some of the commonly mistaken myths about the causes of hair loss and why they are just that, myths.

Hats – Many blame hats for hair loss and avoid them all together to prevent future hair loss. This habit derives from the misconstruction that wearing hats decreases the amount of oxygen you scalp gets, therefore letting it “breathe less.” However, oxygen circulated in the blood is how follicles get oxygen.
Decreased Blood Flow – While you do see less blood flow to the scalp in those who are bald or balding, it is actually an outcome of hair loss because less blood is needed to circulate in the scalp when there is less hair.
High Testosterone Levels – Close, but not accurate. A hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in high levels can contribute to hair loss, but will affect only hair follicles that are pre-disposed genetically. DHT stimulates follicles to shrink.
Shampooing Frequently – Many fear the hair they see going down the drain with each shampoo, and this has resulted in the common myth that shampooing frequently plays a role in hair loss. Shampoo will not affect your roots, so most of those strands of hair coming out are hairs that naturally came to the end of their cycle or were already loose.

There are a lot of myths surrounding hair loss and its causes, and it’s important to educate yourself about the actual causes if you’re concerned. If you’re suffering from thinning hair or hair loss, Hans Wiemann can help restore your hair and eliminate that nuisance from your life. We offer a wide variety of services, including African American hair restoration and options for women. Visit HansWiemann.com today to learn more about our services.
